SAWYER MINI WATER FILTER

The Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System is one of my favourite pieces of kit. If your like me and never bothered with a pump filter because they were either too bulky, too heavy, too expensive or too time-consuming to use then this may be an option for you.

I’ve been content on using Aquamira Water Purifier Tablets 20 pack as a safe, lightweight, inexpensive and effective water treatment in the past or too carry a bit of extra water.

This all changed when the Sawyer Mini came out. First off the mini is light, small, easy-to-use, and inexpensive. With a class-leading 0.1 micron filter that blocks 99.9% of bacteria and the ability to filter an incredible 100,000 gallons (that’s over 378,000 litres!) and still weighing only 59 grams after use it’s hard to go past.

The filter can be used in a few ways (note: comes with a straw, water pouch and back flusher) and the water can be consumed immediately which is a big plus for me over chemical treatment. I have used the straw to drink directly from a stream but I usually carry two 750ml bottles (fits all standard 28mm bottles) and if ones are half empty I’ll top-up from a water source when passing. Off course there will be backcountry trips particularly in summer where there won’t be enough water source’s available and Carrying all the water needed will be necessary.

Bottom line is if you want a cheap, light, versatile, filter that will last a lifetime then the Sawyer Mini is hard to go past. You do have to squeeze the bottle to get a good flow and backflushing is recommended between trips but these are hardly negatives. It can also be used inline with a hydration bladder which I can’t comment on but maybe someone has feedback on this?? Thanks
